Canadian Muslims say they fear a backlash has begun following the weekend arrest of 17 suspected al Qaeda sympathizers accused of plotting bomb attacks.

The police say vandals have smashed windows of a Toronto mosque although they have not made a link between the attacks and the arrests.

Toronto's Islamic Foundation says it might be the beginning of religiously motivated reprisals against Canada's Muslim population, which is estimated at more than 600,000. Police arrested 12 men and five young people. The adults were from Toronto and a suburb, Mississauga; and from Kingston, Ontario. They remain in custody ahead of a court appearance later this week.

Police seized bomb-making materials in a series of raids in Toronto this weekend, including three tonnes of ammonium nitrate - three times the amount used in the bombing of a federal building in Oklahoma City that killed 168 in 1995. The OPP say the suspects were planning to blow up targets in Ontario.

Talk about bringing you to terms of reality. It always seems like catastrophes happen somewhere else, like the trade towers. Nothing like that could happen here, right? That's how it always seems, that things only happen to other people, to other countries. But the aforesaid proves that they are everywhere. They are here, in Ontario. What is their next target? Who knows...
